CHAPTER 108
Maricanâs Recuperation
Lucy is dying?
Marican had long severed ties with Lucianne and never wished to see her againâbut she had never wanted her dead.
All sheâd wanted was for Lucianne to live her life far away, without ever crossing paths again.
She remembered Lucianneâs face the last time she turned away from herâsmiling so brightly, so serenely.
And yet that same woman had hypnotized the former Empress Dowager, wishing only for Marican to suffer.
What did I ever do to deserve that?
Ever since she left the viscountâs house and married into the ducal family, Marican had never once wronged Lucianne or Penelope.
So why had they continued to slander her, to harm her at every turn?
Ruan stepped closer to her as she sat lost in thought and gently wrapped his arms around her.
Then, in a quiet voice, he began to tell her everything he had uncovered.
How Lucianne had used the servant badge of Anneâthe maid who once worked for the viscountâs familyâto infiltrate the Empress Dowagerâs palace as a dining attendant.
How she had gained the Empress Dowagerâs trust, and using the hypnotic candles, brainwashed her into believing that Marican was the one who had murdered Daimond Kymon.
As Ruan spoke, Marican listened silently.
Though she had suspected as much, hearing the full details left her trembling with anger.
This time, she wanted Lucianne to pay for her sins in full measure.
The repercussions of Antwatteâs scheme were far greater than those of Daimond and Kymonâs rebellion.
And because Marican was not a mere citizen of the Empire but a royal of the Kingdom of Allomande, Lucianneâs crime was now formally charged as attempted regicide.
***
âWhat do you mean, regicide? Thatâs absurd!â
Penelopeâs voice shook as she read the morning paper.
According to the article, Lucianne had been consumed by jealousy over Maricanâs royal marriage to Ruan.
Driven by envy, she had conspired with the deposed Empress Dowager to kill her own sister.
Penelopeâs heart had nearly stopped the moment Marican stepped in front of Ruan and was stabbed.
She had never liked that girlâbut she was still her daughter.
Yet when Marican, bleeding, was carried away by Ruan and Lucianne was seized on the spot, Penelope found herself worrying not for the gravely wounded Marican, but for Lucianne.
Marican had Ruan, who cherished her more than life itself.
Lucianne, however, had no one but Penelope.
And now, stripped of her noble title, Penelope knew exactly what awaited her daughter, even without understanding all the laws of the Empire.
No matter what Lucianne had done, Penelope couldnât bear to lose her.
She gathered all the jewelry and valuables she could find and rushed out of the viscountâs mansion.
The entire Empire buzzed with scandalâbut the Duke of Canolufâs estate remained eerily quiet.
Ruan had ordered every servant to keep silent, fearing that news of the affair might trouble Maricanâs peace.
Even without his command, the servants who had once witnessed Lucianne storming the mansion and insulting their mistress wanted nothing more than for Marican never to hear of her again.
In truth, they secretly hoped Lucianne would be sentenced to death like everyone else expected.
***
âAh⌠I didnât realize walking in the garden could make me so happy.â
After days confined to bed under Ruanâs strict orders, Marican was finally allowed outside.
Her physician had confirmed the wound had closed, and she could at last breathe the fresh air.
âMadam, you should still rest a few more days,â Charles said as he poured her tea, worry etched in his tone.
âCharles, the doctor said itâs healed enough not to reopen. Donât worry so much. Ruan just likes to fuss. Itâs really not that serious.â
âNot serious?â Clae exclaimed, draping a blanket over Maricanâs lap. âThat blade was poisoned, my lady! It could have been fatal!â
âI still tremble when I think about it,â Charles added, clutching his chest. âEver since that day, I canât even look at wedding dresses anymore.â
Marican smiled apologetically. âCharles, the dress isnât to blame.â
âPlease, my lady, never scare us like that again,â Clae pleaded.
âYes, yes. I promise,â Marican said softly. Their concern didnât annoy herâit warmed her.
***
âDoes it hurt?â
That evening, Ruan returned from the palace and gently applied salve to her wound.
Though it had closed, the red mark still pained him to look at.
âIt doesnât hurt anymore,â Marican assured him. âItâs just⌠itchy now. That means itâs healing, right?â
âMarican,â he said quietly, his voice strained, âplease⌠donât ever do something like that again. Iâm stronger than you think. You donât have to protect me like that.â
She reached for his hand, her eyes gentle.
âRuan, donât apologize. Even if I could go back to that moment, I would still stand in front of you. When I saw that sword, I didnât even thinkâmy body just moved.â
âMaricanâŚâ
He pulled her close, holding her tightly.
âI wonât ever let you be in danger again.â
Marican blushed and quickly changed the subject. âWhat happened with the trial?â
Ruan sighed and took her hand. âThe court has set a date. The viscountâs daughter and the former Empress Dowager will both stand trial next week.â
âNext week?â
âYes. Youâll need to testify, but if youâd rather notâdonât worry. Thereâs already plenty of evidence.â
âDo I really have to go?â
âYou donât,â he said softly. âNot if you donât want to.â
Marican looked up at him, her eyes firm. âNo, I do want to go. I want to see her punished with my own eyes. I just⌠hope that this time, she truly understands her sins.â
Ruan gave a bitter smile. He doubted Lucianne ever would.
âIf thatâs what you wish, Iâll go with you,â he said. âNow, letâs change your bandages.â
Marican blinked. âBandages? But itâs already healed!â
Ruanâs tone turned serious. âWe canât take chances. If it festers again, I might have to cutââ
âAlright, alright!â she interrupted quickly. âYou win. Bandage it.â
He chuckled softly and began to wrap the clean cloth around her waist with care.
***
âTomorrow after breakfast,â he said, âweâll leave for your recuperation.â
âRecuperation?â she echoed in surprise.
âSince the trial isnât until next week, thereâs time,â Ruan explained, tidying up the medicine box. âIâll take you to the ducal villa.â
âThe villa?â
âYes. The Canoluf family has four of them. Iâm sure youâll love this one.â
Recuperation? For a wound thatâs already healed?
âRuan,â she asked suspiciously, âthis isnât because of my injury, is it?â
âOf course it is,â he said smoothly. âI wanted to take you sooner, but I didnât want to risk reopening your wound. Now that youâre better, you can rest properly there.â
Rest properly? Iâve been resting nonstop here already!
âThatâs not excessive,â he said before she could even protest.
Her eyes widened. âHow did youââ
âItâs written all over your face,â he said with a teasing smile, drawing her gently into his arms.
âThe truth is,â he murmured, âI wanted to take you there after our wedding. But things got⌠complicated. Thereâs something Iâve always wanted to show you. So, I suppose Iâm using this as an excuse.â
Something he wants to show me
Maricanâs lips curved into a smile. âAlright then. Letâs go, Ruan.â
âEverythingâs ready,â he said, brushing her cheek. âWeâll leave right after breakfast.â
***
The next morning, after their meal, the two of them boarded the carriage.
The journey took nearly four hours from the duchy, and before long, Marican dozed off against Ruanâs shoulder.
When the carriage finally stopped, Ruan gently woke her.
âWake up, Marican. Weâre here.â
âWowâŚâ She stepped down, her hand in hisâand gasped. A salty breeze brushed her face, and the endless blue stretched out before her.
âWhat is this place?â
âThis,â Ruan said softly, âis the sea.â
âThe seaâŚâ she whispered in awe. âIâve only read about it in books. I thought lakes were the biggest bodies of water, butâthis has no end! What lies beyond that horizon, I wonder?â
âThe horizon?â he repeated with a small laugh.
âYes! Is it a cliff? Another world?â
Her voice was bright and curious, almost childlike.
Ruan smiled. âIâve never been that far myself. But they say the sea goes on foreverâthat beyond it lies another continent. One day, weâll take a ship and see it together.â
âAnother continentâŚâ she breathed. âHow amazing that sounds.â
He wrapped a soft blanket around her shoulders. âSeeing you this happy makes it all worth it.â
âThank you, Ruan.â
âMaster, the villa is ready,â Edward announced as he approached.
Ruan nodded. âGood. Leave the supplies here, then you may return.â
Edward hesitated. âAre you certain youâll be alright alone?â
âWeâll be fine,â Ruan replied. âJust send bread and soup every morning.â
âYes, sir. And if anything happensââ
âDonât worry, Edward.â
The man bowed. âUnderstood. My lady, Iâll take my leave.â
âThank you, Edward,â Marican said warmly.
Once the carriage disappeared down the hill, Ruan turned to her with a gentle smile.
âCome, my love. Weâll admire the sea later. Letâs eat first.â
At that, Maricanâs stomach growled, and she laughed.
âOh, now that you mention itâI am starving.â
Hand in hand, she followed Ruan into the villa, the sound of waves echoing softly behind them.
