Chapter 27
âWhat Are We Fighting Against?â
âNowadays, itâs a time of peace,â Fane began quietly,
âbut during the Great War, the Fairy Stone was once occupied by the neighboring great powerâthe Kingdom of Nalia.
Our island has always been protected by the royal line,
living self-sufficiently, cut off from the rest of the world.
But when the invaders discovered our powers,
they enslaved us until the war ended.â
âEvery day, we were forced to forge weapons,
chained so we couldnât escape.
For fairies, losing the ability to fly means deathâ
so half of our kind perished during that time.
We were born afterward, so we only know the stories.â
âFairies are born from stones too, right?â
Ruri asked, listening to Faneâs tale.
âYes,â Fane nodded. âDuring the occupation, the island was devastated,
but by luck, a few fragments of gems remained.
We were born from those fragments.â
âI seeâŚâ Ruri murmured. âBut I just thought of somethingâ
if the fairies who guard the twelve months are here now,
whatâs happening in your world over there?â
She looked curiously at the group of fairies.
If they guarded the twelve months, that must mean their world, too,
had a year divided into twelve months.
âFor each month and each birthstone, there are many fairiesâ
and even among them, there are ranks.
We who are here now are the top-class fairies,
so probably the lower-ranked ones have moved up in our absence.â
âI see⌠But tell me something,â Ruri tilted her head,
âYou all can use magic, right?
Then why didnât you fight back?
Could the Kingdom of Nalia use magic too?
If you were forced to make weapons,
does that mean your magic didnât work?â
She voiced her doubt openly.
âWell,â Lichia said softly,
âwe donât know much about what really happened back thenâŚ
but can someone whoâs never fought before,
suddenly be told to killâand actually do it?â
Ruri fell silent at her words.
âAfter that,â Zacro added, âthe Queen of the neighboring Gem Kingdom
destroyed the Kingdom of Nalia and saved us.
For a few years after, we were governed by the Gem Kingdom,
until we gained independence.
Now, weâre sort of a vassal state.
Our king doesnât complainâhe owes them our freedom.â
âBut,â Eme interjected with a bitter tone,
âI think the queen and our king made some kind of secret pact.
Thatâs why we still make things for the Gem Kingdom.
Even if weâre independent, we canât say anything against themâ
so in the end, weâre still like a vassal.â
Their expressions darkened with frustration.
War, Ruri thought, is the same everywhereâ
whether on Earth or in another world.
Listening to the fairiesâ oppressed history,
Ruri couldnât help but think deeply.
Maybe her grandmother had made some kind of deal, too.
HmmâŚ
As she pondered, her gaze fell on the array of jewelry pieces spread across the table.
The next day was a holiday,
so Ruri decided to take Foss and the fairy troupe out.
âStaying cooped up here isnât good for Foss,â she said cheerfully.
âLetâs go out and have a little fun.
Once we reach the park, itâs fine if you show yourselves.â
While Ruri prepared lunch,
Morga watched her curiously making sandwiches.
âIf thatâs the plan, we could play in the bamboo grove out back,â he suggested.
âWhatâs this?â asked Sumire, intrigued by what Ruri was making.
âSandwiches,â Ruri replied. âI put in things everyone likesâ
egg, tuna, ham, and tomato.
Weâll eat them for lunch when we get there.â
The fairiesâ faces lit up in delight.
âDoes it have mayonnaise?â
âOf course!â Ruri laughed at Lemonâs eager question.
âBy the way,â Ruri asked as she packed the lunch,
âwhat did you mean earlier about playing in the bamboo grove?â
âTo humans, itâs just an ordinary bamboo grove,â Eme explained,
âbut for usâitâs a magical space.â
âEh?!â Ruri gasped in surprise.
