Episode 7Â
A small, secluded room, far from my own bedroom.
There, Rian lay fast asleep from exhaustion.
Iâd wanted to keep him in the room next to mine, but my subordinates strongly opposed the idea.
Still, for such a tucked-away place, the room was warm and filled with gentle heat.
âWhen are you going to wake up?â
Rian had collapsed before even answering my confession yesterday. The backlash from using his skill had taken its toll.
âI didnât know his skill consumed that much power.â
At first, I thought he was badly injured because of me and had fallen into a deep sleepâbut the court physician said that wasnât the case.
All his wounds had been healed; all that was left was for him to wake up.
Iâd thought he was just tired. If Iâd known heâd sleep this long, I never wouldâve let him use his skill.
âI never meant to hurt you.â
â…And how am I supposed to believe that?â
âItâs true. If you donât believe me, you can take my heart out and see for yourselfââ
I was idly tapping his hand when he suddenly opened his eyes.
âDo you think Iâm a monster that steals human hearts?â
âMonster or human, what does it matter?â
He sat up, glanced around, and immediately asked:
âWhereâs my sword?â
âWhy? So you can kill me with it?â
He fell silent. How could he act exactly the same as his in-game personality?
I barely held back a laugh and continued.
âI have your sword. Iâll give it back when the time comes.â
âYouâ!â
âDonât be angry. For now, you should do as I say, shouldnât you?â
âI havenât agreed to anything youâve proposed.â
His gaze turned cold. It had been warm when he first woke up, and I found myself missing that warmth.
âAll the humans who trespassed into my castle were released unharmed. The female saint included.â
â…â
âI gave you a choice, but you didnât take it. Iâm not patient enough to wait forever, so I chose something you wouldâve likely picked anyway.â
Rian didnât argue. Even if I gave him another chance, the result would be the same.
A man who sacrifices himself for others, asking for nothing in returnâthatâs the hero humans dream of. And Rian embodied that dream perfectly.
âSo what do you want me to do now?â
He adapted quickly to his situation.
âDidnât I tell you? Iâm going to have you.â
Our eyes metâhis crimson pupils glimmering like jewels, the sight I had longed to see again.
âLetâs eat together.â
â…What?â
âEat with me. You can do that much, even if you hate me, right?â
My gaze flicked to the âaffection meterâ above his head.
Affection: 0 / 100
No need to rush. I was the player who first maxed out Rianâs affection, even outside the game.
Days of sleepless grinding, showering him with gifts and rare items came back to me. If I did it once, I can do it again.
No one knows better than I do what he likesâand what he hates.
âGet changed.â
As the door shut behind him with a thud, I exhaled deeply.
âSo this is what my life has come to.â
When he asked that earlier question, I almost answered,
âWant to?â
âWhat the hell would that even mean? I buried my face in my hands, cursing myself.
That faint, unwanted desireâhow quickly it grows, even without water.
â â â
âWhy is he taking so long?â
It had been a while, but Rian still hadnât shown up. The lavish feast laid out before me felt tasteless without him.
Should I send someone? After some hesitation, I rose to my feet.
If he wonât come, Iâll just go get him myself.
Outside his room, the attendants were in a panic.
âWhat do we do? If heâs any later, the Demon Lord will get angryâŚâ
âPlease, sir! Let us help you dress!â
Ah, I see whatâs going on. Rian mustâve refused their help.
âMy Lord!â
The servants bowed the instant they noticed me.
âYou may leave.â
â…Yes, my Lord.â
Honestly, I was relieved. If they had gone in, they wouldâve seen his body before I didâand that wouldâve been unacceptable.
I sighed and knocked on the door.
âItâs me.â
The door creaked open just enough for his hand to shoot out and yank me inside.
Thud. The door slammed shut behind me.
He cornered me instantly, one arm braced on either side.
âWhere are my clothes?â
âI threw them away.â
âWhy would you do that?â
âThey were filthy.â
Wellâmore like, I saw that saint touch them, so there was no way I was keeping those.
âWhat, you donât like the ones I gave youââ
The words died in my throat as I looked at him.
Was that even clothing? The scrap draped over his torso looked ready to fall off with a single gust of wind.
âWhat⌠is that?â
âThatâs what Iâd like to know.â
Rian sighed, his brow furrowing.
âAre you trying to seduce me?â
âAre you insane?â
âThen why are you wearing that?â
I was dead serious. My sanity was hanging by a thread as it was.
His bare chest was half-exposed, and even the scowl on his face somehow made it worse.
âI gave you several outfits.â
Technically, I told the servants to bring something appropriate.
He gestured toward the wall. Hanging there were outfits no one would dare wear in daylightâmesh, lace, and that flimsy rag he currently had on.
âIs this the Demon Lordâs taste in clothing?â
âI do like it when you wear things like that, but I never told them to make you wear them.â
â…â
Apparently, the demons had assumed my âheroâ was a sort of personal concubine. How else would such clothes show up?
âSo you put that thing on instead?â
âIâd like to take it off. Right now.â
âYeah⌠you probably should. Itâs not exactly dinner attire.â
If anyone else saw him like thatâno, absolutely not.
That rag wasnât fully off, but it wasnât really on, either.
If I couldâve locked him away all day, maybe I wouldnât have stopped him. But I settled for one last, longing glance before he finally changed into normal clothes the servants brought.
âSo even the Demon Lord eats human food, huh?â
âIâm an exception.â
Undead donât eat. Vampires drink blood. Incubi steal life force.
Most demons feed in other ways. Itâs not that they canât eat human foodâthey just donât need to.
But Iâd been human once, so eating was still a necessity.
âIs it strange to see me eating human food?â
â…â
He said nothing, quietly taking a bite. I poked at my greens, then set down my fork.
Ever since I possessed this body, food hasnât tasted like anything. I only eat out of obligationâto keep from collapsing.
Rian noticed.
âWhy arenât you eating?â
âBecause what I want isnât on the table.â
âThen ask for it.â
âItâs not ready yet. Iâm waiting for it to be done.â
He didnât press further.
âYouâre not even curious what it is?â
âIâm not.â
Before I could stop him, he stood and walked off.
He wandered aimlessly through the castle, and I followed quietly behind.
After two full circuits of the halls, he finally turned around, clearly irritated.
âHow long do you plan on following me?â
âItâs my castle. Am I not allowed to walk around it?â
âIâm not going to run away. Stop trailing me.â
His tone made it clear: Dinnerâs enough. Donât push your luck.
âThen come outside with me.â
â…â
âCome on. Staying cooped up in here must be suffocating.â
He didnât answer, but followed me nonetheless. Maybe he felt the same.
Even outside, we remained within the barrier I had erected.
At the highest point of the castle, a cold wind brushed our faces. The mountains and the shimmering ice wall surrounding them were in full view.
âDid you make that?â
âYeah. Canât have humans wandering in like last time.â
No one without immense power could break through. Even a demon lord would have to work for it.
âAlso, call me by my name. Stop with the âDemon Lordâ stuff.â
âIâd rather notââ
âThatâs an order. You belong to me now, so youâll obey me. Right?â
He frowned. Was saying my name really that hard? Fine. Iâll just say his instead.
âRian.â
â…â
âRian.â
âStop saying it.â
Wow⌠Saying his name out loud is way more embarrassing than I thought. It felt easy when I was just typing âOur RianâĄâ on a game screen. But now that heâs actually here, answering meâitâs different.
âWhat exactly do you plan to do with me?â
Now itâs âyou,â huh? Not âDemon Lord.â Progress?
âYou said you liked me. Isnât it natural to keep close what you like?â
âStop joking around.â
âI told you, Iâm not joking.â
I let out a small sigh and looked at the ice barrier.
âI want peace.â
âYou never cared about war before.â
âI didnât. But ignoring it doesnât make it go away. There are still people who want to drag me into it.â
I donât want to see you die. Thatâs why Iâll move first.
But I didnât tell him that.
âIâll become the one and only ruler under the skyâand end these endless wars.â
âI donât believe you.â
âI know itâs hard to trust me. No one builds faith overnight.â
â…â
âSo stay with me. Iâll try to make you believe.â
Just then, the wind shifted, and I caught sight of someone beyond the barrier.
Even from that distance, her figure was clearâlight blonde hair fluttering in the wind, and translucent golden eyes.
The saint, Eshia, holding Rianâs brooch in both hands, as if praying to return him.
âLooks like Iâll have to prove something first.â
âProve what?â
âThat what I feel for you isnât a lie.â
I tugged his collar and kissed him.
Rian stiffened, startled by the sudden contact.
My gaze, however, flicked to the saint outside the barrierâher face twisted with shock and fury.
Why are you spying from there, anyway?
Rianâs not yours to take.
Heâs mine now.
