Chapter:02
It was a large detached room located within our familyâs property.
The place my sister Kana had called âthat spotâ was this very room.
It was often used by my older brother and his band members as their practice space.
As proof, there were plenty of instruments and sound equipment set up around the room.
After guiding the girls there, I immediately switched on the lights.
âWe can play instruments here without worrying about noise complaints, so itâs perfect for practice.â
âSo this is the place Kana mentioned?â
âYeah. Itâs a great spot for both meetings and rehearsals.â
Since the room was a bit removed from the neighboring houses, noise was never an issue.
âAre you sure itâs okay for us to use this room?â
âYeah, it should be fine. My brother used to come here with his band to practice all the time.â
âThatâs not what I meant.â
âHuh? Whatâs wrong?â
Puzzled by her serious tone, I asked Nao what she meant.
She was looking around the room with a thoughtful expression.
âI mean, is it really okay for us to use this room? Your brother doesnât still use it, does he?â
âOh, thatâs fine. He practices somewhere else now. He hasnât used this room lately.â
âI see. Then there shouldnât be any problem.â
âRight. Thatâs why he recommended it to us.â
âAlright then. Sorry to ask so soon, but can you show us how good you are on bass?â
That sudden request came from the twin-tailed girl who had been with Kana and the others earlier at the girlsâ school gate.
I froze, caught completely off guard.
âHuh?â
Even Kana looked surprised by the girlâs words.
âWait, Misa! Thatâs kind of suddenââ
âWhat? I just want to see what he can do. Weâre not going to get in trouble for making noise here, right? Itâs perfect.â
âStill, thatâs a bitâŚâ
âI donât mind.â
I cut Kana off and spoke up.
âLittle brother?â
âKana invited me to join, sureâbut if youâre meeting someone new, itâs only natural to wonder, âCan this guy actually play?â I get it. Letâs just do it.â
I picked up my bass, gave the strings a test strum, and adjusted the sound.
âAlright then. Listen carefully.â
With that, I began to play.
I wondered how the others were hearing itâthe solo bass line flowing smoothly in tune.
I was playing well, but the silence from the room made me oddly nervous.
Before long, I finished the piece.
â…So, how was that?â
The four girls exchanged glances.
â…It was fine, I think.â
âIâll leave the judgment to Kana.â
âSame here. Leaderâs call.â
So it seemed there were no complaints about my performance.
I waited to see how Kana would respond.
Without hesitation, she smiled and suddenly hugged me.
Her soft chest pressed right into my face as she did.
âCongratulations, little brother. From today, youâre officially part of our band!â
âGot it. Iâll do my best. Nice to meet everyone.â
Still trapped in her embrace, I managed a strained smile.
It always went like thisâonce Kana hugged me, I couldnât move.
And I couldnât exactly push her away, either.
I didnât want to do anything that might make her hate me.
Kana finally let go.
âAlright, now that thatâs settled, letâs start practicing together!â
âYeah, sounds good.â
âSince weâve got our new member, this is a good place to start.â
âShould we just run through the songs casually for now?â
They each picked up their instruments and started preparing.
âSo, what was I supposed to do now?
âCome on, little brother. Follow our lead.â
âUh, okay. Got it.â
Ah⌠so I am playing too.
Guess they were eager to start right away.
As the three of them began playing, I joined in with my bass, following their rhythm.
Then Kanaâs clear, beautiful voice filled the room.
Was I keeping up? Or holding them back?
That worry nagged at me as the song carried on.
We played three songs, one after another, like clockwork.
No one complained; everyone just played their parts.
And somehow, their combined sound came together naturally, creating a unique harmony.
All the songs were new to meâI was barely managing to keep up.
When we finished, everyone exhaled at once.
âPhew⌠well, thatâs good enough for now.â
âFor a quick run-through, that went pretty well.â
âKana seemed to be in great form, so Iâd say no problem.â
âEven with a new member, we managed to sync up. Looks like weâll be ready in time for the main event.â
âMain event? What do you mean?â
Misa, the twin-tailed girl, had said something that caught my attention.
When I tilted my head, she explained:
âWeâre going to be performing live soon.â
âA live show!? No one told me that!â
âOh⌠Kana, you didnât mention it?â
âAhâyeah, I forgot. Sorry.â
âItâs fine. We can explain now.â
âWeâve been practicing for this live show, but we were short one member. Now that youâve joined, we can finally rehearse properly for it.â
âSo whereâs the live show happening?â
âAt our school. Thereâs going to be a cultural festival soon, and weâre performing there.â
âWait! Your school is an all-girls school, right!?â
I practically yelped.
Kanaâs school was a girlsâ academy, and during events like the cultural festival, male visitors needed special entry tickets.
âYeah, thatâs right. And if I remember right, your school has the day off that day, doesnât it?â
âYeah, we do.â
True, my schoolâa boysâ schoolâhad the day off, but that wasnât because of the girlsâ festival.
Most of us just spent the day relaxing elsewhere.
âThen itâs perfect! You can perform with us.â
âWait⌠I donât mind performing, but donât I need a ticket to even get in?â
âOh⌠right. We do need entry tickets, donât we?â
Apparently, she had completely forgotten about that.
Kana scratched her cheek awkwardly.
âThatâs right. The school issues those⌠uhâŚâ
â…Kaede Suou.â
âRight, Kaede. Youâll need a ticket to enter, since itâs a girlsâ school.â
âObviously. Without one, he canât even get inside. That would ruin the whole performance.â
âBut how are we supposed to get one? I donât know any girls from your school besides Kana.â
That was true.
I hardly had any female acquaintancesâKana was basically the only one.
Each student received just one ticket, and surely Kana and the others would want to give theirs to someone special to come watch them perform.
âThen Iâll give you the one I get from school. Problem solved, right?â
âWait, but werenât you going to give that to my brotherâŚ?â
âThatâs fine. I already turned down Ryuichiâs invitation, so Iâve made up my mind. Iâll give my ticket to you.â
âButâŚâ
âOh, come on! Youâre a guyâjust accept it and be happy!â
Even so, it was hard to be purely happy about it.
I vaguely remembered there being some kind of strange rumor or âcurseâ about boys entering that school⌠though I didnât know the details.
âOkay. Thank you. I really appreciate it.â
âThatâs better.â
Kana smiled warmly.
âAnyway, now that thatâs settled, weâve got about three weeks until the festival. Between part-time jobs and festival prep, weâre all going to be busy.â
âOf course. Youâre suggesting we focus on personal practice for now, right?â
âExactly! Iâll be practicing on my own too, but finding time for group sessions will be tough.â
âThatâs true.â
âSo, letâs switch to individual practice for a while?â
At her sudden suggestion, the three girls looked thoughtful.
âIndividual practice, huh? Not a bad ideaâŚâ
âWell, with all the festival prep, it canât be helped.â
âYeah, everyoneâs going to be busy anyway.â
Fair enoughâI had my part-time job too.
âAlright then. Weâll each practice on our own for now. Weâll get together for group rehearsals on weekends.â
âGot it. We meet here on Saturdays and Sundays?â
âExactly.â
âOkay, now that thatâs decided, how about we run through one more song before we wrap up?â
âAgreed!â
âWait, hold on! I havenât finished tuning yetââ
Before I could finish, they were already set and ready to play.
âCome on, hurry up!â
âIâm tryingââ
âIâll lead you through it if you want.â
Kana said that as she pressed right up against me.
âNo thanks! Iâll finish tuning in a sec, just give me a minute!â
