Chapter :01
The high school I go to is an all-boys school, and we donât really have much contact with the girlsâ school across the street.
Itâs not like weâre on bad terms or anythingâitâs just that we donât have any reason to interact.
Of course, there are a few guys who are dating girls from that school, but not many.
Our cultural festivals and sports events are held on different schedules, which makes it even harder to interact with them.
As for me, Iâve never really been interested in that sort of thing. People around me even call me âthe indifferent guy,â but Iâve never cared.
Today is the day I promised to meet up with Kana-neechan. (Thatâs my older cousin Kana.)
Itâs after school now, and most of the students have already gone home.
The only ones left are probably those who belong to committees or clubs.
Iâm part of the Public Morals Committee myself.
After finishing my roundsâour committeeâs main jobâI went back to my classroom, packed up, and left school.
Even though I have plans with Kana-neechan today, luckily, I donât have a shift at my part-time job.
When I reached the shoe lockers, a student came walking down the hallway toward me.
âYo, Suou. You free today?â
âKazami-kun? Whatâs up, all of a suddenâ?â
Even if he asks if Iâm free out of nowhere, I donât really know how to answer.
His name is Shingo Kazami. You could say weâre friends, but only the kind that talk about small, random stuff.
âWell, actually, today I made plans to meet some girls from the girlsâ school.â
âOkayâŠâ
âBut weâre short one guy, and I thought maybe you could fill in.â
âSo thatâs why youâre asking me?â
âExactly. So, what do you say? If youâre free, wanna come along?â
I donât really have any other plans with friendsâŠ
Butâ
âSorry. Iâve got something planned today, so I donât think I can make it. You should ask someone else.â
âI see⊠Well, thatâs too bad. Maybe next time, then.â
âYeah.â
Kazami-kun said that and headed back toward the school.
If I didnât have plans, I probably wouldâve gone.
But not today.
Today, I have an appointment with Kana-neechan.
So Iâd better hurry to the girlsâ school.
She told me it was a band gathering, so Iâll bring my bass along.
By the way, I keep my bass in a paid locker near the station.
Why there, you ask? Because if I brought it to school, the teachers would definitely confiscate it.
If I were in the light music club, it would be fine, but since Iâm not, theyâd treat it as a personal item.
And if it were confiscated, Iâd have to go through a whole lecture just to get it back. That alone could take over an hour.
So itâs just less trouble to keep it in a locker.
If I keep walking straight down this road, Iâll reach the station.
When I got there, I went straight to the paid lockers and unlocked mine.
Inside was my beloved bass guitar.
I slung it over my shoulder and pulled out my phone to check the time.
âCome to think of it, she told me the meeting place, but not the exact time. I wonder if itâs okay to head over nowâŠâ
I remembered what happened three days ago and frowned slightly.
Kana-neechanâthough sheâs an honor student, polite, and stunningly beautifulâcan be a little airheaded sometimes.
âWell, no point overthinking it. Iâll just go.â
With a sigh, I started walking toward the girlsâ school.
When I arrived at the front gate, four girls were standing together. They were all still in uniform and carrying their bags, so it seemed they hadnât gone home yet.
One of them was definitely Kana-neechan.
When she noticed me approaching, she called out.
âAh, youâre late! What took you so long?â
âSorry. I had to go pick up my instrument, so it took a whileâŠâ
âI see. For a moment, I thought you might not come.â
âNo way. I made a promise to you, Kana-neechan. I wouldnât break it.â
âThatâs true. Still, you actually went all the way to pick up your instrument?â
âYeah. You said it was a band meeting, so I figured I should bring it along.â
âInstrument? You meanâyou play bass?â
One of the other girls asked with interest. She had short hair and gave off a boyish vibe.
âYeah, thatâs right.â
I answered, and she looked at the bass on my back, studying it carefully.
âHm. I seeâŠâ she murmured suspiciously.
âŠWhatâs that supposed to mean?
âWhatâs wrong, Nao-chan?â Kana-neechan asked before I could.
The short-haired girlâNaoâgave me a sharp look.
âItâs nothing. I was just wondering if he has any experience.â
âWellâŠâ
âHeâs never been in a band before,â Kana-neechan answered quickly, as if to defend me. âBut heâs really good at bass.â
Nao sighed.
âThatâs not enough.â
âNao-chan?â
âSkill alone isnât enough. If heâs going to be part of a band, he needs to understand what it means to be a band member. Otherwise, weâll never improve! You understand that, right?â
âI know that. But right now, weâre missing a key member.â
âAnd thatâs him?â
âWe donât have a bassist, remember?â
âWell⊠yeah, thatâs true, butâŠâ
âThen thereâs no problem, right?â
âI guess not⊠but stillâŠâ
Nao still looked dissatisfied as she glanced my way.
I think I could understand what she was getting at, somehow.
The two girls beside her tried to calm her down.
âCome on, Nao-chan.â
âYeah, Kana-chanâs already decided.â
They were clearly part of the same band too.
Looking at all four of themâincluding Kana-neechanâI noticed something.
Her band didnât have any male members.
âBy the way, little brother,â one of them asked. âYouâre off work today?â
âYes, I donât have a shift today.â
âGood! Then can we have the band meeting at your place? Is that okay?â
âMy house?â
âIs that a problem?â
Kana-neechan asked in a pleading tone.
âŠOh boy.
My parents both work, so they wonât be home.
But my older brotherâwho knows about him.
No point worrying, I guess.
âI think itâs fineâŠâ
âGreat! Then letâs head to your place!â
âYay!â
âUh⊠wait a secââ
How did it turn into this?!
What if my brother is home?
They didnât seem to care about my concerns, and started walking toward my house.
Kana-neechan, especiallyâonce she decides on something, she never listens.
At this point, all I could do was pray.
Please, GodâŠ
Let my brother not be homeâŠ
Of course, my bad feeling turned out to be right.
When I got home, my brother was there.
âKaede, huh? And Kanaâs with you too.â
âHello, Ryuichi-san,â Kana-neechan greeted before I could speak.
The other three girls bowed politely as well.
My brotherâs name is Ryuichi Suouâthe very person who had a huge influence on Kana-neechan.
Heâs also the reason I started practicing bass myself.
Heâs in a locally famous band that mostly performs outdoor concerts.
âSo, whatâs with the crowd?â
âOh, um, weâve got a bit of a situationâŠâ
âWell, whatever. Iâm heading out soon. Make sure you lock up.â
âBand meeting again?â I asked.
He frowned.
âNone of your business. Anyway, donât bother the neighbors, alright?â
âI know, I wonâtââ
âGood. Because no matter how hard someone without talent tries, itâs pointless. You should give up and find another path.â
ââŠâ
âHey,â Kana-neechan said sharply. âThatâs kind of a harsh way to put it.â
âIâm just stating facts. You know that too, donât you, Kana? Kaede has no talent and no bandmates to rely on. In the end, people like that just get dragged down by others. Thatâs why, back then, Iââ
âYeah, I remember. But I turned you down. And now, I have my own band.â
ââŠâ
Her words clearly hit him hard.
Well, considering she once rejected his confession, thatâs not surprising.
ââŠDo what you want,â he said finally, leaving the living room.
âIs that okay?â I asked.
âItâs fine. Thereâs really no better place for our meeting,â Kana-neechan replied.
âPlace?â
âHey, little brother, can we use that room?â
âYeah, of course.â
âPerfect. Letâs go there for our meeting.â
âO-okayâŠâ
âIâm curious what kind of place it is,â one of the girls said. âBut if Kana-chan says soâŠâ
âThen follow me,â I said, leaving the living room.
That room has soundproofingâitâs perfect for band practice.
Kana-neechan already knows about it, so she wonât be surprisedâŠ
But the other three girls?
Theyâre definitely going to be amazed.
