Chapter 17
 Kanzaki Interrogates
ââŠâŠâ
I was about to take my seat, but the more I looked at Kanzaki, the more her expression and demeanor seemed irritable. So I decided that today I would step outside the classroom for a bit and only return to my seat right before the morning chime.
With that in mind, I started moving from my desk toward the classroom doorâwhen a voice stopped me.
âIchiiri, where are you going? Thatâs your seat, isnât it?â
âHuh? âŠAh, itâs nothing.â
Hearing that from Kanzaki, I couldnât possibly say, âI was going to leave the classroom because your face looked so grumpy,â so I obediently took my seat and faced her.
ââŠâŠâ
ââŠâŠâ
Since I couldnât figure out why Kanzaki was in a bad mood, I decided to approach her as usual.
âKanzaki, good morningââ
Just as I tried to greet her as normal, Kanzaki cut me off, speaking abruptly.
âIchiiri, are you hiding something from me?â
ââŠHuh?â
Hiding something from Kanzaki
I thought for a moment, but nothing came to mind.
âIâm not hiding anything.â
âReally? If you tell me honestly now, Iâll forgive you with just a little foot-stomping.â
âThat doesnât count as forgiving! But really, Iâm not hiding anything.â
When I said that, Kanzaki looked into my eyes and, with her earlier irritability slightly subdued, spoke.
ââŠMaybe saying you were hiding something because itâs not like itâs something you have to tell me was an exaggeration, but I think it relates to your future conversations with Yuzumi-chan. More than that, if I were going to witness it in that kind of situation, I wanted to hear it directly from you as a friend.â
âDirectly from meâŠ? Sorry, I have no idea what youâre talking about.â
As I spoke, confused, Kanzaki said:
âI mean about your girlfriend.â
âMy⊠girlfriendâŠ? M-my girlfriend!?â
That power word made me shout out loud for a moment, but I quickly returned to my normal voice.
âM-my girlfriend? What do you mean?â
âWhat do I meanâŠ? You donât need to hide itâI saw it myself.â
âSaw itâŠ? What did you see?â
When I asked, Kanzaki showed a fleeting bitter expression, but then tried to suppress it and said:
âYou⊠were holding hands with a cute girl, and that girl was hugging you.â
ââŠ!? That canât be true, right? I wouldnâtââ
As I tried to refute it, something occurred to me.
âKanzaki⊠is this about Saturday?â
When I asked, Kanzaki nodded slightly.
âYes. It was a date with your cute girlfriend, so you must remember it well.â
Because I see Yuzumi as my little sister, hearing words like âcute girlâ or âgirlfriendâ made me completely confused for a momentâbut now it all made sense.
Saturday⊠that was the day Yuzumi and I went out.
On that day, I did indeed hold Yuzumiâs hand, and she hugged me. I donât know how Kanzaki ended up seeing it, but apparently she did.
Terrible timing, but first, I needed to clear up Kanzakiâs misunderstanding.
ââŠKanzaki, the âcute girlfriendâ youâre talking about isnât my girlfriend.â
âLies⊠After doing something like that, you stillââ
âOn Saturday, the person I went out with was my little sister, Yuzumi.â
When I said that, Kanzakiâs eyes widened in surprise. Then she spoke.
âThat child⊠is your little sister, Yuzumi-chan?â
âYes.â
âEven though you were being so lovey-doveyâŠ?â
âIf it looked that way, it just shows how aggressive Yuzumiâs attack was.â
ââŠOh, so sheâs not your girlfriend⊠Thank goodnessâŠâ
When I told her the truth, Kanzaki muttered something softly, apparently relieved.
âIf this clears up the misunderstanding, then we should⊠deal with Yuzumiââ
Just as I was about to say that, Kanzaki cut me off.
âNo, before that⊠Ichiiri, do you have time after school today?â
âAfter schoolâŠ? I do, but are we doing something after school?â
ââŠI want to tell you something.â
Kanzakiâs expression was serious, and there was no way she could reveal what she wanted to say right here. I nodded in response.
âAnd so, after school, Kanzaki and I left the school and started walking together.
