Chapter 13
A New Takeoff
The morning after the Luminark was completed.
In the garage bathed in the light of dawn, we stood where Chief Engineer Gran had called us.
Beyond the heavy steel doors, the Luminark, now fully tuned and ready, waited in silence.
The smooth, silvery hull reflected the morning sun as if awaiting the moment of awakening.
Before it, Chief Gran stood with his arms crossed, quietly watching us.
â…So, you two plan to set out on a journey now?â
His tone was low, yet there was something testing in his voice.
âYes. We want to travel the worldâand search for my missing parents.â
I stepped forward to answer, and beside me, Mile nodded firmly.
âThatâs why, when we turn seventeen next year, we plan to enroll in the Astoria Flight Academy and earn an international pilot license.â
(Because you need that license to operate freely beyond the borders.)
The moment I finished, Chief Gran let out a long sigh, like a puff of smoke.
âI see. Then… until you get that license, Iâll be limiting the Luminarkâs performance.â
âWhat?â
I couldnât help blurting it out. The ship had just been completedâour dream finally realizedâso why now?
âWhy?â Mile asked, her voice equally confused.
Gran placed a hand on his chin, staring at the shipâs hull for a moment before speaking.
âTo put it simply⌠even as its designer, I have to say this thingâs specs are too much for you right now.â
There was a faint smile in his voice.
âAgility, power output, control responsivenessâhonestly, every aspect is abnormal. So good that you might start thinking itâs your own skill. But listen carefullyâŚâ
His eyes met ours, filled with stern sincerity.
âWhen your tool outpaces your ability, you start to cover up your own lack of skill without realizing it.
Keep that up, and one day itâll come back to bite youâhard. Maybe even fatally.â
Though his words were calm, they struck deep in my chest.
âThatâs why, for now, Iâm locking down all but the essential functions. Go study at the academy. Learn proper flightcraft as pilotsâand then you can unlock its full power.â
Then, Granâs expression softened just a little.
âDonât worry. I wonât send off a shipâor its pilotsâhalf-baked.â
My chest burned with emotion.
He really cared about usâboth the ship and our futures.
âYes, sir! Weâll definitely become pilots worthy of the Luminark!â
âIâll keep an eye on Skai to make sure he doesnât get carried away,â Mile added.
âLeave the flying to me!â Nocti chimed in proudly. âIâll whip you into shape good and proper!â
Gran gave a short laugh.
âAlsoâbefore you enter the academy, register with the Explorerâs Guild and take on a few jobs.â
âThe Explorerâs GuildâŚ?â
âYeah. Flying around nearby is fine for now, but if youâre planning to travel the world, youâll need armaments.â
âTo mount weapons on a civilian airship, guild registration is required.â
âI understand. Once we get used to handling the Luminark, weâll head there.â
âGood. Ohâand take this. Stick it on your ship. The garage is yours to use anytime.â
Gran handed us a Gran Workshop logo sticker and headed back inside.
âââ
âThere, that should do it.â
I pressed the Gran Workshop logo onto the Luminarkâs gleaming hull.
The sturdy, understated emblem looked perfectly at home on the silvery exterior.
Now that we bore this mark, there was no turning back.
Not as just Skai, but as a pilot. My responsibility had just been etched into my heart.
I sat in the cockpit, Mile in the navigatorâs seat beside me.
And Nocti? Naturallyâon Mileâs lap.
In plush form for now, but when needed, heâd support the Luminarkâs systems.
âAlrightâtime for Luminarkâs first flight!â
At my excited call, the cockpitâs main monitor lit up, lines of text flickering to life one after another:
Main System: Boot Complete
Output Level: Maximum
Flight Core Synchronization: 100%
Anchors Released
Takeoff Clearance Granted
Countdown Start
3⌠2⌠1⌠Lift-off.
At that instant, the Luminark rose smoothly into the air.
âWow, Skaiâweâre flying!â
âYeah! Letâs keep it steady and warm up the systems.â
We circled above Granâs workshop for about half an hourâbut it felt like only a moment.
Even with most of its true capabilities sealed, the Luminark glided powerfully, effortlesslyâ
as if the very wind itself had become our ally.
The cockpit didnât even have a physical canopy, yet we werenât afraid.
No wind entered, and our view stretched endlessly clear.
All thanks to the multi-layer barrier system.
âSheâs so quietâŚâ Mile whispered.
âNo kidding. Itâs almost too peaceful,â Nocti muttered.
âThe controls feel amazing,â I said. âItâs like Iâve been flying her for years alreadyâŚâ
A full year of effortânow taking tangible form in the skies.
This wasnât just a ship.
It was our dream itself.
The Luminarkâour wingsâhad truly begun to soar across the world.
After enjoying the skies a little longer, we returned safely to the workshop hangar.
âSoâhow was it? Your first flight with your own hands?â
At Granâs question, I couldnât help smiling.
âIt was incredible! We just landed, but I already want to fly again!â
âHaha! Thatâs what an airship is all about.â
Gran nodded in satisfaction, watching our excitementâ
as though remembering the passion of his own youth.
