Chapter 2
The Successor of the Scarlet Magic
âSomeone from the Scarlet clan? Me?â
The air instantly grew tense, and suspicion clouded Reonâs face. It was the most natural reaction to Adelâs sudden, absurd claim.
âI was surprised myself,â she said. âI never imagined the last Scarlet would appear in Sylphus⌠five hundred years later.â
âThatâs not funny,â Reon replied flatly. âYouâve got no proofâitâs just nonsense.â
âOh, I do have proof. Watch carefully.â
Adel slowly raised her left hand. A single crystal sphere appeared above it, floating in the air. A faint scarlet light shot from her palm and was absorbed into the surface of the crystal. The moment it touched, countless square panels bloomed outward, forming a three-dimensional projection that softly enveloped them both.
âThis is the forbidden spell Dreamwalkâa magic that allows us to converse across time and space,â Adel explained.
âSo what does that prove?â
âAs the name suggests, the user can enter the dream of a chosen Scarletâpast, present, or future. The target simultaneously falls into a deep sleep.â
As she explained, Adel flicked her wrist. The screens slowly began to rotate, each displaying a different sceneâsocieties filled with art and literature, cities brimming with industry, and the vibrant breath of nature in the countryside.
The images seemed to drift between the medieval world and the twenty-first centuryâa strange and ethereal mixture.
âEver since my consciousness was freed from the past,â Adel continued, âIâve wandered through the flow of future time in search of a Scarlet. Within the span of five hundred years, I found only oneâyou. And magic doesnât lie.â
âThatâs a stretch. Isnât there any other way to verify that?â
Reonâs expression grew complicated. He had hoped for something tangibleâsomething proven by genetics, or at least science.
âWellâŚâ Adel placed a thoughtful hand under her chin. âThere is one more way.â
She met his gaze again.
âIf either parent is a Scarlet, their child inevitably inherits the bloodline and becomes a crimson mage. So, Reon Amayaâwere either of your parents Scarlet?â
At that, Reon froze. His hands clenched into fists before he even realized it. Something deep inside his chest twisted painfully.
âI donât want to answer. No, I canât.
His body slumped forward, hair falling over his eyes. Though his gaze was hidden, the sorrow radiating from him was unmistakable.
âHeyâwhy are you crying?â Adel asked gently.
ââŚIâm fine. Sorry. I know you didnât mean any harm⌠but somehow, whenever I talk about this, I feel so heavy inside.â
He shook his head and looked away. Two faint trails of tears ran down his cheeks.
âMy parents died seven years ago⌠in a sudden car accident. They werenât Scarletsâor magiciansâjust ordinary people.â
Since that day, Reonâs life had drifted aimlessly. His small house was comfortable enough, and his parents had left enough money to get him through university. But every day after school, he returned to a dark, silent home. Even the faintest spark in his heart would soon flicker out.
If fate had already decided to abandon him, what meaning was there in effort at all?
âThatâs why I play games.
They were his only refuge, a place where he could escape reality without paying a price.
Only his two childhood friends had kept him from giving up completely.
ââŚIâm sorry,â Adel murmured. âI shouldnât have asked.â
Feeling guilty, she reached out instinctively to embrace the sorrowful boyâbut stopped halfway, smiling faintly instead.
âI understand, Reon,â she said softly. âWe crawl through the darkness, always reaching for the light. Even the smallest hope, when we finally find it, we cling to it desperately. We imagine beautiful lives, we pray for a better tomorrowâthat is the purpose of our existence. To live peacefully with those we love⌠thatâs a wonderful world, isnât it?â
Her words shone with longing for a radiant future.
But Reon noticed the flicker behind her expressionâan emotion she was hiding. A mask, much like his own.
âYeah,â he said quietly. âA world like that would be nice.â
ââŚBut reality is cruel,â Adel went on. âIt rewards the strong and crushes the weak. And for those who fall and wander⌠the only way to stand again is to destroy everything and start from zero.â
Scarlet light welled around her clasped hands, flowing toward her palms. The energy compressed into a glowing cube, smaller and smaller, until finally a single ruby descended into her hands.
âIf you were given a chance to rewrite your life,â she said softly, âwould you take it?â
A chance to fix his lifeâpressing âRestartâ after a bad ending.
Any gamer would reflexively say yes. But Reon hesitated. Something in Adelâs voice told him there was more to it.
âEverything has a price,â he said cautiously. âSo⌠whatâs the cost of this restart?â
âYou noticed, huh?â she smiled faintly. âThis ruby holds the magic of the Scarlet. If you accept it, youâll inherit that powerâand your destiny will change dramatically. But I canât guarantee it will go well. In fact, I can almost promise itâll bring you even more pain before the end.â
Of course, Reon thought bitterly.
He looked away, realizing there was nothing more to say. He didnât want to cause more trouble to anyoneânot after all the chaos his life had already become.
A quiet, ordinary life sounded much more beautiful.
ââŚThatâs enough,â he said at last. âWeâre wasting time.â
Lifting his gaze to the ceiling, Reonâs voice trembled with resignation.
âSimple, peacefulâthatâs the story I want. So⌠Iâll have to decline your offer.â
Adel didnât move. She didnât even know what expression to wear. She pitied his pain but still wanted him to accept the legacy.
âTell me, Reon⌠are you happy?â
ââŚWhat?â
âCan you truly smileâfrom the bottom of your heart?â
Reon fell silent. He hadnât thought about something like that in years.
Happiness meant something different to everyone. For him, life was filled with emotionâjoy, anger, sadnessâbut true happiness? Something always felt missing.
ââŚMaybe not.â
Adel smiled faintly, as if sheâd been waiting for that answer. She waved her hand again, and new visions appearedâfive hundred yearsâ worth of memories across the world: Japan, Europe, America⌠countless civilizations.
Among them, one recurring image emergedâ
Chaos and war.
No eternal victor, no endless peace. Only death, brought by those who swung their weapons.
âThis is horribleâŚâ Reon whispered, averting his eyes.
âI needed you to see it,â Adel said quietly. âIf nothing changesâif we let the world keep moving as it isâthis is what awaits.â
Her calm voice carried a deep, indescribable sorrow. She placed a hand on his shoulder.
âLong ago, there was a witch who could see the future,â she said. âHer name became legendâthe Scarlet Witch. That witch⌠was me.â
âCursed?â Reon echoed. âBut prophecy sounds like a gift.â
A bitter smile crossed Adelâs lips.
âGift? Hardly. Every vision I ever received showed me despairâhuman misery, grief, greed without end. Those prophecies brought only tragedy. The entire Scarlet clan was hunted down and killedâŚâ
Reonâs eyes widened. âYou were⌠killed?â
âRidiculous, isnât it?â she laughed hollowly. âThe witch who ended witch hunts was hunted herself. But even then, I didnât give up. In my final moments, I saw hope in my last prophecyâhope for a brighter future. So I cast Dreamwalk.â
Her words overflowed with sincerity that filled the very air around them.
Reon felt that painâher grief became his own.
âAdelâŚâ he murmured.
âTell me,â he said quietly. âWhat was the prophecy?â
Adel closed her eyes, hand on her heart, and began to chant.
âFive hundred years hence, the world shall fall again into darkness.
Calamity shall descend upon magi and mortals alike.
Amid chaos, peace and change shall be brought forth by
the last descendant of the Scarlet and the Silver Moon Knight.
ButâŚâ
She stopped.
âThatâs⌠all I can say,â she whispered.
Reonâs heart pounded.
ââThe last Scarlet descendantâ⌠you mean me?â he asked under his breath.
Heâd never been anything specialâso why now was he being told he carried the future of the world?
Did he really want this?
Did he really need this?
ââŚDoes it have to be me?â he finally asked.
âYes,â she said firmly. âYouâre the last Scarlet.â
âAnd your prophecies⌠have they ever been wrong?â
âNever. Thatâs what hurts mostâthey always come true.â
No hesitation this time.
âNot everyone is granted happiness,â she continued. âBut everyone has the freedom to pursue it. If you accept this power, Reon, you wonât just change your lifeâyouâll change the worldâs future.â
âSo⌠a win-win, huh? Fine. How does this inheritance work?â
âItâs simple. The ruby will merge with you, granting you vast mana and new magic.â
âMana⌠like MP in a game?â
Adel chuckled. âYou could say that. Itâs the lifeblood of a magicianâthe energy flowing through our veins. Each personâs capacity differs, but training can expand it.â
âAnd⌠if it runs out? Or if thereâs too much?â
âWell⌠there have been deaths. More often, the body just collapses.â
Her words froze Reon in place. His hands trembled.
âSo if my body canât handle itâŚâ
âYouâd suffer massive internal damageâpossibly fatal.â
Fifty-fifty odds, then.
But even before that realization fully settled, Reonâs fear began to fade. He exhaled slowly.
âThatâs unfair,â he said with a wry smile. âIf Iâm told I can change the fate of the world, how could I refuse without feeling like garbage?â
âIâm sorry,â Adel whispered. âFor cornering you like this.â
Reon gave her a small, gentle smile.
ââŚI wanted a quiet life,â he said. âTo find someone I love and stay in this town forever. But⌠maybe just once, Iâd like to try using magic.â
Adel blinked. âYou meanâŚ?â
âYeah,â he nodded. âIâll take my second chance.â
Even he didnât fully understand why he agreed. Maybe pity, maybe instinct.
But for the first time, he wanted to gamble on something.
Adelâs eyes softened. âOnce you take this path, thereâs no turning back.â
âI know.â
Reon clenched his fist.
âThen⌠I, Reon Amaya, accept the inheritance of the Scarlet Magic.â
The ruby flared, breaking free of its bindings and shooting straight into his chest.
It glowed through his clothes and skin, fusing directly into his heart.
Then came the painâblinding, searing pain.
âAaaaaaaAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!â
His body burned as warmth surged through his bloodstream.
In the real world, his sleeping body convulsed, clutching his chest. Scarlet light wrapped him like an aurora.
A mark on his neck changed shapeâits pattern deepened into a crimson circle with a black feather at its center.
âHah⌠hah⌠thought I was gonna dieâŚâ
When he finally lifted his head, the pain had faded, replaced by faint relief.
âCongratulations, Reon⌠You did it,â Adel whispered weakly. âThe inheritance⌠is complete⌠your future⌠will surelyâŚâ
She coughed, blood staining her lips. Her body trembled as her strength drained away.
Her time was up.
âAdel!â Reon caught her as she collapsed. Her pulse was faint, her body cold as ice, fading slowly into transparency.
âWhatâs happening?!â
âThe Dreamwalk⌠its time is endingâŚâ
âNo⌠donâtââ
âThis is the Scarlet Witchâs final magic,â she said, smiling faintly. âBeautiful, isnât it?â
Even as her body crumbled, she smiled as serenely as when heâd first seen her.
âThis is goodbye, ReonâŚâ
âThe prophecyâyou said âbutâ! What was the rest?!â
She pressed a finger to his lips.
âSorry⌠I canât tell you. If I do, that future will vanish. One more thingâthe Scarlets each have a contracted spirit. When you wake up⌠donât forget to summon yours.â
âYou shouldâve said that first!â
âForgive me, Reon⌠Iâve only brought you troubleâŚâ
Her breath faded. Her body dissolved into white particles, scattering like snow in the air.
The space around them began to collapse.
The ceiling cracked. Glass shattered. Reon sank against the wall, closing his eyes.
âIâm⌠so tiredâŚ
The same suffocating feeling heâd felt when she first summoned him filled his chest.
His vision blurredâhis hearing fadedâ
âand then,
He opened his eyes.
Reon awoke from the dream.
Only a faint crimson magic circle flickered twice in his palm before fading away.
