Chapter 115 â The Grand Duchessâs Chef
âItâs still morning⌠are you sure youâre up for this?â
âOf course!â
I quickly answered before Loic could even think of taking the stew away.
He entered the room, carrying a tea tray.
âOh my goodness!â
I forgot all dignity and crawled across the bed on my knees to greet the tomato stew.
âWould you like to eat in bed?â
âNo! Iâll eat at the table.â
There was no way I could trust myself not to spill red soup all over the white sheets.
Swallowing in anticipation, I sat down at the table as Loic placed the dish in front of me.
Steam rose gently from the bowl, and the spicy scent of pepper instantly made my mouth water.
âItâs been so long since I had stew!â
Even though Madam Marie had once given me her recipe, I hadnât been able to taste tomato stew in ages.
Iâd wanted to ask Verney to cook it just like Madam Marieâs version, but I couldnât bring myself to do itâhe mightâve felt hurt or offended.
âAnd itâs been forever since I went to an inn, tooâŚâ
Just as I was about to dive into the bowl like a starving soldier, Loic added quickly,
âItâs hot. Please let it cool first.â
His expression was so worried that I exaggeratedly blew on the spoon, making sure he could see I was cooling it properly.
Only after he looked somewhat reassured did I take a big bite.
The tangy tomato pieces slid down my throat with a satisfying warmth.
I felt as though all the heaviness in my chest had finally cleared away.
âAhh, this is the taste!â
âDoes it suit your taste?â he asked.
âIdâsh delishus,â I mumbled with my mouth full.
ââŚIâm glad.â
Loic smiled gently as I mumbled through a mouthful of stew, tears of joy practically welling in my eyes.
As I was devouring it like someone who hadnât eaten in days, he asked curiously,
âYou like it so much⌠why didnât you ask Verney to make it earlier?â
âOh, actually, I did get the recipe from Madam Marie, butâŚâ
After I explained my reason, Loic frowned slightly.
âSo you endured all this time just because of that?â
He looked like he had a lot more to say, but instead, he simply pushed the bowl of stew a little closer to me.
âThereâs plenty. Please eat as much as you like.â
âBut waitâhow did Verney even know Madam Marieâs recipe?â
I blinked. âI never gave it to him⌠Did Sir Leon tell him?â
When I looked up in confusion, I noticed Loicâs ears turn slightly red.
ââŚVerney didnât make it,â he admitted.
âWhat? Then⌠did Madam Marie come here and make it herself?â
âNo.â
Loic hesitated, cleared his throat, and said quietly,
âI made it.â
ââŚWhat do you mean, you made it?â
I stared at him blankly, not quite processing the words.
âWait, youâre saying you cooked this?â
âYes. I learned the recipe from Leon during my last expedition,â he explained.
âYou went into the kitchen? Yourself? Into the actual kitchen?â
Loic nodded while I repeated the question several times in disbelief.
âBut⌠why?â
If he said just one word, Verney wouldâve brought him anything he wantedâwhy cook it himself?
âBecause itâs something Annette likes,â he said simply. âI wanted to make it for you myself.â
At that, I froze with my spoon halfway to my mouth.
Inside, I was fighting not to lose my composure entirely.
âA man who can cook spicy tomato stew perfectly? Thatâs⌠cheating!â
âThis isnât fair,â I muttered.
âWhat?â
âYou should at least have one thing youâre bad at.â
ââŚExcuse me?â
âBeing good at swordsmanship, leadership, and cooking? Thatâs just too much,â I grumbled.
âOh.â
Only then did Loic realize it was a compliment, and a faint smile touched his lips.
âStill,â I said, trying to sound stern, âdonât cook again, okay? Poor Verney will be terrified for his job.â
âUnderstood.â
âBut today, I want another bowl,â I added with a grin.
Loicâs eyes softened, clearly pleased.
âIâll bring it right away.â
While he stepped out, I swallowed the last of the tomato stew. The warmth spread through me, filling me with new energy.
âLetâs not overthink things. Everything will work out somehow.â
Along with the hot tomato stew, I swallowed my worries, too.
âI really donât know anything!â
Lady Meisel sprang to her feet, her jeweled dress jingling loudly.
âPlease sit down, Lady Meisel,â Hedrick said evenly.
Scowling, she reluctantly sat again, frustration and fear mixing on her face.
She had received a letter from her father earlier that day, stating that the Grand Duke himself would question her personally.
âMake my hair big and elegant! Use the flashier necklace! No, not that dressâthe bright pink one I had tailored by Lamondria!â
The reason didnât matter.
She was going to meet the Grand Duke face-to-faceâthat alone was thrilling.
So she had spent hours dressing up before heading to the Grand Dukeâs castle.
But instead of being led to his reception room, the knight guided her to a plain interrogation chamber.
âH-here? Iâm supposed to meet His Grace here?â
How could they bring the future Grand Duchessâat least in her mindâto such a shabby room?
âIs His Grace still being controlled by that Duchess?â
However, when the door opened, it wasnât the Grand Duke who appearedâbut Hedrick, the gray-haired vice-captain of the knights.
âIs His Grace not coming?â she demanded.
Hedrickâs calm, unimpressed expression only infuriated her more.
âThen call Sir Tiern instead!â she snapped.
âThe questioning will be conducted by me,â Hedrick replied coolly.
Without a hint of sympathy, he began what was more like an interrogation than an interview.
âYouâre saying you gave this brooch to the head maid for no particular reason?â
âHow many times do I have to say it? I just felt bad for the poor old woman and gave it to her!â
Even after repeating herself, Hedrick kept circling back with the same questions, wearing down her patience.
âThis man is impossible!â
Just when she thought the matter of the brooch was finally over, Hedrick slid another document toward herâa bank withdrawal slip.
âWhat did you use this money for?â
âT-thatâsâŚâ
It was the same money Marzella had taken from her to hire people to throw eggs at the Grand Duchess.
âIf Iâd known this would happen, Iâd have agreed on a story with her!â
âI only lent her some because she said she needed money,â Meisel said quickly, feigning confidence.
Marzella wasnât exactly loyal, but she was clever enough to know sheâd need Meiselâs help to get out of prison.
âShe wonât betray meâshe canât afford to.â
âYou didnât ask why she needed it?â Hedrick pressed.
âIf you were close enough to give her such an expensive brooch, shouldnât you at least have been curious?â
âHow should I know what she does in her personal life? She asked, so I lent it, thatâs all!â
She crossed her arms and muttered irritably, âIf youâre that curious, go ask her yourself.â
âSheâs not in a condition to speak,â Hedrick said coldly.
Meisel froze for the first time, her lips clamping shut.
Hedrick sighed softly as he watched her pale, trembling yellow eyes.
With this level of evidence, it would be hard to formally imprison a countâs daughter.
Still, the Grand Duke clearly wanted both the countâs family and the lady to face punishment.
All Hedrick could do was summon her here, intimidate her, and hope she would confess something useful.
âThough she doesnât look the least bit intimidated,â he thought grimly.
Even the great Hedrick was growing weary of her shrill voice.
Through the small window set into the stone wall, the evening sun was already dipping low.
âThis is getting nowhere.â
âFor now, you may return to your estate,â he said. âHis Grace will decide the formal punishment later.â
âWhat?!â
Meisel shot to her feet, her face turning red.
âPunishment? For what?! I didnât do anything wrong!â
As Hedrick stood, she cried out again,
âPlease, let me see the Grand Duke! Iâll explain everything to him myself!â
âThe Grand Duke is not someone you can meet at will,â Hedrick replied flatly.
âThen at least let me see the head maid!â
âThatâs not possible.â
âPlease!â she begged.
âSheâs like a mother to me! I just want to make sure sheâs okay.â
Her tone had changed completely from earlier, when sheâd shouted that he should âask the maid directly.â
âI only want to check if sheâs well,â Meisel said desperately. âPlease, at least let me give her a blanket for the night.â
She lifted a small basket sheâd brought with her.
Hedrick hesitated.
âIf sheâs trying to silence the maidâŚâ he thought.
But perhaps it would be better to grant her a meeting and watch for suspicious behavior rather than refuse outright.
âPlease,â she whispered, clasping her hands together. âI canât sleep from worry. If she did something wrong, Iâll persuade her to confess. Just give me one chance to talk to her.â
Tears shimmered convincingly in her eyes.
ââŚVery well,â Hedrick said at last. âBut only for a few minutes. If you do anything suspicious, the next cell over will become your own.â
Meisel flinched at his sharp gaze but nodded quickly.
And so, Hedrick granted her permission to meet with Marzella.
